Hello

Dropbox provide an easy api to save files in dropbox folders:

https://www.dropbox.com/developers/releases

It would be great if you can make kinnect save the kml|gpx... files in your dropbox folder. In that way, we will have easy access to all our route files, and we don't need to send us by email one by one.

Thanks for your great app.

Hi. Its a great idea! ... it's one we are already working on. We plan to take that a little further and have complete Dropbox syncing, so all your apps data is backup and accessible from Dropbox.

Its actually really quite a bit of work to get it to work the way we want it to. You see, standard kml/gpx files do not save all the information that Kinetic saves but we want syncing to work both ways if needed. So if you replaced your phone or some data got corrupted or something we want you to be able to restore data from Dropbox to your phone. We have some ideas of what we can do but we really want to do it right, so no rush.

I can't give you a timescale from when it will be ready .... but we are on it.

How do you seeing it working?:
Every time you save a new route it syncs with Dropbox. The folder structure in Dropbox would look the same as History in Kinetic. You would then see all the KML files for the events.

But what happens if you delete a file from Dropbox? Would you expect the app to save it again to Dropbox next time you sync or delete it from Kinetic? Or simply just warn you that something has changed and give you some options.

How about using Dropbox public folder fro route sharing pages, so then you can remove it from the public folder any time to stop it being shared?

Im interested in how our users would expect this too work.

    Thanks
    Stuart

    Hi!

Thanks for the great news!! :)

Maybe, the best is to warn the user in the moment he login to dropbox, that if he deletes some file in dropbox, the file will be deleted automatically in kinnect. Dropbox offers options to restore deleted files. Users can use that to restore a file they have deleted.

In the other way, if you decide too ask user if a file was deleted in dropbox, and not in kinnect, may be stressful if user has deleted four or more files, and you ask him for every one.

A different case is if user deletes or renames the kinnect dropbox root folder, in that case, maybe the best is to ask user where is now, or if he want to create a new want with all the kinnect files.

In all cases will be great that we can choose in which format will have the files or to save in all formats.

    Sorry for my bad english.

I think it will probably be just in KML format, that allows us to add custom data to the file ( which will need to do ).
We think of Dropbox as being a backup to all your sessions, but at the same time you can always make a copy of the KML files if you want to do something with them. We could also add an 'export' folder which we could use to dump exports from the app in other formats. Something like that anyway ...

Thanks for your feedback. I can add you as a beta tester if you like when we start to add dropbox.

I suggested gpx files, because kml files doesn't have timestamp for every point, and if you want to use this files to localize the photos you made with a digital camera, you can't use them. But I understand that kml is more standard than gpx.

It would be a pleasure to be a kinnect beta tester.

Any other users have suggestions on how Dropbox could work for them?

In the toplevel of the directory tree you can create a file like KineticHistory.html reflecting the app's History view. You can see how 1Password does it, the top level sync dir contains a file named 1Password.html which contains all css, images (base64), javascript, libs, etc and when you view it from the Dropbox web it opens as a webapp.

Is this one still on the list? Or was it probably dumped for iCloud support?

I would really enjoy managing my Kinetic files on my desktop machine, as well as seeing the activity/event structure reflected in the directory structure inside a dropbox folder. Files could be named by timestamp and for the sake of recognizability by starting point and destination of a path (If it's not too painful to implement or wasting too much resources. Location lookup in CoreLocation should make this possible, though.)

Anyway. Keep up the good work. I am really enjoying Kinetic.

I would love it if I could save the GPX file to dropbox directly without having to email it to myself first. I use Kinetic Lite app and love that I can share with Dailymile & Runkeeper!

    Thanks for the great app!!

though since I've been downsizing, I've already deleted all my workouts (after making sure they were on Runkeeper) and I've since deleted the app. Lack of repsonse here was a key factor.
